When purchasing a used car in New Jersey, it is important to consider how many miles are on the vehicle, and factor in how old it is with it. Luckily, Kelly Blue Book publishes a mileage chart every year giving the latest recommended guidelines:

Year – Current Mileage
2005 = 13000 to 18000
2004 = 29000 to 34000
2003 = 43000 to 48000
2002 = 55000 to 60000
2001 = 65000 to 70000
2000 = 71000 to 76000
1999 = 77000 to 82000
1998 = 80000 to 85000
1997 = 83000 to 88000
1996 = 86000 to 91000

For example, if you are looking at a used 1998 Chevy Cavalier in Union, NJ – you shouldn’t buy it if it has more than 85,000 miles on it. Granted, that’s if you want a solid car. If you see one with about 140,000 miles on it, it still may be a good vehicle, however you should expect a very low price. Right now the KBB value for that same Cavalier with 140,000 miles on it is about $1200.00 dollars.
